MDF & Plywood CNC Cutting Online
High-speed CNC routing for custom MDF, plywood and HDHMR parts.
Why CNC Routing for MDF and Plywood
MDF and plywood are cut with CNC routing rather than a laser. Routing uses a high-speed spinning bit that removes material cleanly, avoiding the charred, darkened edges a laser would leave on wood-based boards. It is the right process for interior elements, furniture components and decorative panels.
At Lightyear Industries our large-format routers cut complex shapes, pockets and profiles, and our instant quoting means you get a price based on your exact cutting path in seconds.
Materials and Thickness
| Material | Available thickness | Process |
|---|---|---|
| MDF | 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 18, 25 mm | CNC routing |
| Plywood | 12, 18 mm | CNC routing |
| HDHMR | 0.5, 1, 1.2, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16 mm | CNC routing |
| Engineering Wood | 17 mm | CNC routing |
MDF is easy to cut, engrave and sand, and takes paint or a coating well. HDHMR is a similar board with added moisture resistance for humid interior areas. Full descriptions are in the materials guide, and rates are on the rate card.
Design Notes for Routing
CNC routing uses a rotating bit, so inner corners are automatically rounded with a radius equal to half the tool diameter — for example, a 6mm tool gives a minimum inner-corner radius of about 3mm. The kerf equals the bit diameter (typically 3-6mm). We offer 3mm, 4mm, 6mm and 8mm tools, plus high-hardness tooling for denser materials. As with all processes, designs must use closed loops that do not intersect; see the design and quote page for the full guidelines.
Edge Finishing and Applications
Routed MDF and plywood are typically sanded and then painted or coated, and engineering wood comes with a laminated finish. Common applications include:
- Custom cabinetry and furniture components
- Architectural wall panels and decorative jali screens
- Acoustic panels and speaker enclosures
- Display and retail fixtures
For a plastic alternative, see acrylic laser cutting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is MDF routed instead of laser cut?
CNC routing gives a clean, uncharred edge on wood-based boards, whereas a laser would scorch the cut edge.
What MDF thicknesses are available?
MDF is available in 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 18 and 25 mm.
Can you cut complex shapes and pockets?
Yes. CNC routing supports profile cutting, pocketing and engraving in addition to through-cutting.
Is there a minimum order?
No — there is no minimum order quantity.
